The Latest Happenings

We’ve been busy at St. Peter’s the past few weeks reaching out to our community here in Canton.  Here’s a glimpse of what’s been happening at St. Peter’s…..

Veterans Day Soup and Chili Supper

On November 11th, we had the privilege to serve our local veterans at our Annual Veterans Day Soup and Chili Supper.  The evening included a raffle, 50/50 Drawing, and delicious soups and chili.  All the proceeds from the 50/50 drawing were given to  the family of Sgt. Douglas Riney while all other proceeds were given to the Canton VFW to help our local veterans in need.  This year we were blessed to have a large portion of the food donated by Canton Hy-Vee and several raffle items were donated by WBYS, Black Maple, and American Grille.  Volunteers from the local Girl Scouts, St. Peter’s, and other community members helped to make the event possible.  It was a fantastic night to see our community rally together to serve those who served our country.

Lego Builders Club Rings Bells

Canton Lego Builders Club served our community by ringing bells for the Canton Salvation Army at Farm King.  It was a great way to put what we have learned at LBC into practice.  The Salvation Army did a volunteer highlight of the builders ringing which helped the kids see the importance of what they were doing.

St. Nicholas Day Celebration

On December 6th, we had our Annual St. Nicholas Day Celebration.  The evening included a special visit from St. Nicholas who told us stories about his work and Christmas traditions, fun St. Nicholas inspired games like a penny toss, and crafts.  The night was filled with joy as kids ran from  station to station and enjoyed delicious treats.

Lego Day Camp 2017

Last Saturday, we had the pleasure of building with 32 children at our 2nd Annual Summer Lego Day Camp!  It was a blast for not only the builders, but also the volunteers.  Builders worked together to make Lego brick volcanoes, used stamps and crayons to make Lego brick art, and created creations through games.  We look forward to welcoming everyone on Saturday, August 5th at our first meeting of the new year!  To find out more about Lego Builders Club, click here.

Fun on the Square

This weekend we partnered with the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and Canton Main Street at their Music in the Park and Kids Fest.  On Friday night, we had a blast at Music in the Park passing out popcorn and fans to all the concert attendees.  We are looking forward to providing free popcorn and fans to attendees every Friday night for the rest of the concert series.

On Saturday morning, we had a “Hulk” of a good time at our “Hulk Smash” booth at Kids Fest.  The kids blasted through the walls so quickly, we had to enlist extra volunteers to rebuild the walls.  It was a fantastic experience and we look forward to participating again next year.  We loved having the opportunity to meet new families and make more connections within our community.

Legos at the Park

On Wednesday, we teamed up with the YMCA’s Summer Parks and Recreation Program for some Lego fun!  We built various creations including fidget spinners and played Lego games.  It was a fantastic opportunity not only to share about Lego Builders Club, but also to share the love of Christ with kids in our community.

Chamber Champion

A few days ago, St. Peter’s was honored to be selected as the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce Chamber Champion for the 2017 2nd quarter.  We are truly honored and blessed to be a part of the Canton community.  Below is the article released by the chamber.

Chamber Champion – 2nd quarter Announced!

St. Peter’s Church was founded in 1891 and is currently very committed to this community working to support many needs. St. Peter’s was nominated for our 2017 Chamber Champion of the 2nd quarter for excelling in community involvement. Some of the organizations they are involved in are, Chamber of Commerce Board, Fulton County Rehabilitation Center Board, Canton Area Ministerial Alliance, and Planning and Zoning committee for the City of Canton,
St. Peter’s Church is active in assisting with many community events the Chamber sponsors such as Community Work Day, Canton Cruise In, Music in the Park, and Taste of Canton. Rob Goebel has been a part of the church for 18 months and has so far dedicated much time & support to making many community events a success and we value the partnership.
Other organizations and programs the Church works with includes the Spoon River Pregnancy Center Fatherhood mentors, and a fatherhood program, at Illinois River Correctional Center.
During Christmas time they participated in the Angel Tree Program, Operation Christmas Child and ringing bells for several hours for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

In addition to having many hours of community service they plan to offer a community garden this year! St. Peter’s is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need whether it’s at the food pantry or cleaning up litter along the roadside.
To be nominated for Chamber Champion the Member & Public Relations Committee are seeking business people who excel in community involvement, employee development, impact and/or innovation, customer service or other criteria that set their business apart.

Father Rob Goebel of St. Peter’s Church said “we are honored even to be nominated let alone selected as the Chamber Champion for this quarter. There are so many other organizations and businesses in our community who could have easily been selected for this honor and we’re proud to stand with them.”

Congratulations to St. Peter’s Church and Rob Goebel for reaching out to everyone. Thank you from the Chamber of Commerce for your support & hard work in the community!
